Unexpected Lesson

I'm an old soul. Meaning, I would rather sit at home with a good crochet project and Golden Girls instead of bar hop on a Friday night. I listen to and know the words of some of the oldest songs you'll ever come across. I enjoy my church services traditional with a hymn book and piano instead of a rock concert. I'm ok with this and I have learned to embrace this aspect of my life.

So today when I was given the chance to head to the lake and play Liverpool with some ladies that are around 60 years older than me, I jumped at the opportunity. I've painted with these ladies since I was in middle school and have learned a lot from them.

I shared the car ride to and from the lake with a lady that has been in my life for quite a while now. I've always known she and her husband but have never really gotten to hear their story. Today she spent the entire ride telling us how she met her husband and how their lives came to be. The best part of the story was when she explained how she and her husband moved from Missouri to Georgia with only $50 to their name. Let me stop there and say that I realize that $50 isn't what it used to be but it still wasn't a ton of money at that time either. They took a leap of faith together and prayed that it would all work out in the end. Which it did. She still lives in the only house they've ever bought and still has the same bedroom suit that she bought before they were married. Which she was so proud of, she mentioned twice.

In this age, we're so into keeping up with not only the Jones' but also the Smith's, Bennett's and every other family on the block. I have even fallen into the trap myself in the last month or so. I look at what we have and wonder why we don't have more when I really need to take a step back and be thankful for what we do have.

So, with my unexpected lesson, here are my blessings:

1.) A roof over my head each and every night.

2.) Food on the table.

3.) A healthy family.

4.) A good job to go to every day.

5.) Family that has been supportive with every decision I've ever made.

Your turn!

  1. My thankful prayer I learn when I was small is to always thank HIM for the roof over my head: the clothes on my back: the food on my table. Later in life I added the love I receive. Amen
